Alfresco Coffee Roasters is more than a coffee company. For our team, sustainability is a way of life, and our business is a vehicle for giving back. We prioritise people and planet in working towards a brighter future for future generations. From sourcing to brewing, this dedication is deeply ingrained in every aspect of our operations. The steps we’re taking are outlined below.

We source all of our coffee responsibly

ETHICAL SOURCING

We prioritise relationships with growers who share the same values. By sourcing beans directly from farmers who set their own prices, we ensure all hard work receives fair compensation. We support the initiatives empowering farmers, promoting gender equality, and investing in the communities where coffee is grown.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

We understand the environmental impact of coffee production and take proactive measures to minimise our footprint where possible. We work with growers employing sustainable agricultural practices such as utilising organic farming methods and planting shade trees on plantations. A number of growers in our network dedicate portions of their farm for habitat, meaning this land is left to nature instead of farmed. As for water and energy consumption, we’re constantly exploring ways to reduce our use throughout our operation.

COFFEE WASTE

Both our Moruya and Batemans Bay locations bag up their coffee grounds and leave them out for customers to take home. The chaff, a by-product of the roasting process, is also collected and utilised by local community members. These bags are hot property and the practice contributes to a more circular economy. Our hessian coffee sacks are also sold off for charity, generating funds for our project work overseas.

CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

Our practices are always evolving as we embrace innovation while staying true to our values. We regularly assess our processes, seek feedback from stakeholders, and implement improvements to enhance our environmental and social impact. Our journey towards sustainability in the coffee industry is ongoing.

PACKAGING INNOVATION

Investing in eco-friendly packaging solutions helps minimise waste and encourages responsible consumption within our community. We’re committed to reducing single-use plastics and excess packaging. Our packaging utilises post-consumer recycled materials are are recyclable and compostable where possible.

We offer wholesale clients the option to have their product delivered in reusable drums for 5kg and 9kg quantities, a system which reduces the amount of single use packaging generated by our wholesale clients. Over the life of each drum, this amounts to a considerable amount of plastic kept out of our waste streams.

Our takeaway cups are made from sustainably-sourced paper, printed with water-based inks, and manufactured right here in Australia, eliminating the emissions otherwise produced in importing them from overseas.

In our cafes, we incentivise customers to bring a keep cup by offering a discount with each use. For those looking to purchase their own for the first time, we’ve partnered with Project PARGO on a range of reusable drinkware. For every cup and drink bottle sold, proceeds are donated to provide clean drinking water to those in need.
